What is Western Scholars?

The Western Scholars program is designed for exceptional student leaders interested in pursuing a unique and rewarding academic experience. The program provides opportunities for outstanding students to learn and grow as both students and global citizens in an engaging, enriching, and inspiring environment. Through this program, students are recognized as high achievers and are provided opportunities to participate in diverse activities to enhance their university experience.

As members of the Western Scholars honors society, students will be exposed to a variety of cultural, social and academic interests. The connections made through this society will include not only your peers, but also with Associate Deans, Professors and respect social-cultural community leaders. The Western Scholars program also provides you with recognition of your academic achievements as your Western Scholars designation is noted on your academic record and your degree diploma upon your graduation.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to join Western Scholars, students must have a minimum admission average of 90% and register as a full-time student at Western University. Students with equivalent levels of achievement who are entering with an International Baccalaureate or who have been admitted as international students or transfer students are also eligible.

To retain the Western Scholars designation, students must achieve a sessional average of at least 80% with no mark less than 65%, on a full course load each year. Students enrolling in courses during the Spring/Summer term must achieve at least 70%, with no mark less than 65%.

Incoming first year students who are interested in Western Scholars should contact scholarsprograms@uwo.ca by October, 2025.

Any current upper year student interested in becoming a Western Scholar should contact their respective academic advising office to discuss eligibility. Students wishing to enter the program in their upper years must have met the requirements each academic year.

To renew your Western Scholars status each year, students should select the Western Scholars option on the Intent to Register (ITR) application.
