What was your degree and academic path at Western? How did Scholar’s impact your academic trajectory?
I completed a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree with an Honours Specialization in Physiology at Western University. As part of the Scholar’s Electives (SE) program, I was exposed to diverse academic topics beyond my major, which strengthened my ability to think critically across disciplines. The program’s research opportunities allowed me to complete two year-long thesis projects in Medical Physics, which broadened my knowledge and confidence in exploring new fields. The community-engaged learning experience in my final year further reinforced the importance of applying knowledge beyond the classroom. Scholar’s Electives played a key role in shaping my academic journey, equipping me with the skills and mindset needed for success in my journey to medical school and beyond.
What did you do after Western and where are you now?
After graduating from Western, I started medical school at the University of Toronto, one of Canada’s top medical schools. The skills I developed through the Scholar’s Electives program—curiosity, adaptability, and confidence in exploring new fields—have been invaluable in my medical education. The program played a key role in shaping my approach to learning and problem-solving, which continue to guide me as I train to become a physician.
How did you stay involved/active in your community categorization? What kept you competitive?
After graduation, I remained deeply involved in my community, driven in part by my experience in the Community-Engaged Learning course offered through the Scholar’s program, which reinforced the importance of service beyond the classroom. In medical school, I continue to seek ways to give back, whether through volunteering, mentorship, or community outreach initiatives. Additionally, my prior research experience from the Scholar’s Electives program gave me the confidence and skills to pursue new research opportunities, allowing me to stay engaged in academic inquiry and contribute meaningfully to the projects I’m working on. The combination of community involvement and research has kept me competitive while also enriching my learning and growth as a future physician.
What is your advice to a young Western Scholar?
Be open to exploring beyond your comfort zone. The Scholar’s Electives program offers unique opportunities to engage with diverse subjects, research, and community initiatives—take full advantage of them. Even if something seems unrelated to your main field of study, you’ll be surprised by how much you can learn and grow from new experiences. Embrace curiosity, seek mentorship, and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. The skills and confidence you build through this program will serve you far beyond your time at Western!
